FAQ

When I finish my tour can members of my family remain in the UK?

No. If dependants wish to extend their stay in the UK they must normally depart and apply for the appropriate visa overseas. Missions requiring further guidance should please contact the UKVI Embassy Team (UKVIEmbassyTeam@homeoffice.gov.uk).

After my tour ends, can my children remain on their exempt vignettes to complete their studies?

No. Student children will lose their exempt status but may extend their studies by applying for a student visa

 . To obtain a student visa they would have to meet all the requirements for entry as a student. This includes:

(a) attending a bona fide private educational establishment;

(b) being enrolled on a full-time course of at least 15 hours organised daytime study per week; and

(c) providing evidence of adequate funds.

My child(ren) are over the age of 18, but are not in full-time education. Can they obtain a visa extension while I am still accredited to the UK?

No. In order to remain as dependants and therefore qualify for a visa extension children must be in full-time education.

Do dependent children need to wait until a diplomat has finished their posting in order to apply for a student visa?

No. Dependent children can apply for a student visa at any time in the year, they do not have to wait until the diplomat has finished their posting. What is the process for renewing my private servant’s visa?

Protocol Directorate does not process visa extensions for private servants holding Temporary Work – International Agreement visas. Applications must be made direct to UKVI. Please consult FCDO Note Verbale No A160-22 for further guidance about the employment of private servants.
